This weekend provided one race in Orange County, California, the Magic Shoe 5000(formerly Bastille Day 5k). Edward Muge returned from Kenya for the first time since December 2006. Edward recently won the 10,000m event at the Kenyan National Championships. He certainly showed his conditioning with a blistering 13:55 time. This was a course record and the elite organizer feels it is the fastest time for any 5k in Orange county over the last 10 years or so! Great going Edward!

Macdonard Ondara continued his consistent running with a 2nd place finish(14:19) and marathoner Mathew Kosgei was a solid 4th(14:25). Edward and Macdonard earned time bonuses.

On the ladies side, Caroline Rotich won easily in 16:19 and earned a time bonus as well. Super Caro!

This was a preparation race as all of these athletes compete this week in bigger events. On tap for this week are:

Jul 13, 2008 - Boilermaker 15k, Utica, NY
Macdonard Ondara 5th 15 km
In Utica, Macdonard Ondara continued his consistent performances with a 5th place finish in the Boilermaker 15k. This was another superb job by Macdonard as he proves his strength against the most formidible opponents in the country.

Jul 5, 2008 - Peachtree, Olympic Trials,
On Friday in Atlanta, Macdonard Ondara finished a very solid 7th in the toughest 10k event in the US, the Peachtree Road Race. It was strongly contested and his time of 29:07 was very good considering the change to the finish where the final 600 meters was uphill. Leah Kiprono also competed but struggled with the humidity and long travel to the race from Nairobi. They both will head to Utica New York on Friday to run in the Boilermaker 15k on Sunday.

In Nairobi on Friday, Rose Kosgei made a bid for the Olympic team as she competed against the strongest women in Kenya in the 10,000 meter event. Rose finished in 9th position with a great run. She did not make them team but made us all very proud of her hard work and dedication to her work.

On Saturday in Nairobi, Haron Lagat ran the Steeplechase trials and was running in 4th position when he took a bad fall and was spiked on both front thigh muscles. Haron did try to continue but had difficulty as he had also lost a shoe and could not continue through the water jumps without traction. His injury required a tetnus shot and stitches. He is ok and will be recovering with his family at home.

Edward Muge, after winning the Kenyan National Championships last week had contracted Malaria the day before the Trials. He was running well through 18 laps of the 10,000 meter but was forced to step off the track due to fatigue form the illness.

This was a gallant effort by all of our members and we are very proud of them. We look forward to next year's World Championships run.

Jun 28, 2008 - Kenya National Championships, Nairobi
Edward wins 10K Championship, going to olympic trials
Edward Muge 1st 27:52 10 km Qualified for Olympic Trials
It is with excitement and joy that we announce that Edward Muge won the 10,000m event yesterday in Nairobi at the Kenya National Championships. Edward had been working very hard for this opportunity and was blessed with a winning performance. His time of 27:52 was a personal best and his final lap was the difference maker. Congratulations Edward!!

Edward will now compete next week in the Olympic Trials for the Kenya team at the same distance.

The other members of AmeriKenyan Running Club set to run in the trials are Haron Lagat in the steeplechase and Rose Kosgei in the 10,000m event. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers for next weekend.

Jun 21, 2008 - Grandmas Marathon, Duluth
Lamech has an emotional win
Lamech Mokono 1st 2:13:39 Marathon Bonus for running sub 2:14
Jynocel Basweti 11th - Marathon -
Joseph Mutinda 12th - Marathon -
Wesley Ochoro 15th - Marathon -
Caroline C Rotich 2nd - Half-Marathon -

An equally amazing event in Duluth took place on Saturday at the Grandmas Marathon. Lamech Mokono, who joined the club in March, ran away from the field at the 12.5 mile mark and cruised home to victory in a personal best time of 2:13:39. It was an emotional time as last years winner, Wesly Ngetich, had been killed during the violence earlier this year in Kenya. Lamech was wearing the same #6 bib which Wesly wore last year. Excellent effort Lamech and many more successes to come. Enjoy your trip home and well deserved time with family!

Also in the same race our newest member, Jynocel Basweti ran a solid 11th and Joseph Mutinda was right behind him in 12th, Wesley Ochoro was also close in 15th place. These were all strong efforts considering there were 40 men in the elite field.

In the half marathon Caroline Rotich led most of the race and finished in 2nd against and strong group of ladies. Caroline continues her very consistent run of top 5 performances.

Joe Qualifies for Mountain Running Championships!
Joe Gray 4th 1:01:31 Other
On the eastern side of the country, American Joe Gray took on the toughest hill racers in the country, competeing in the US Mountain Running Championships at Mt Washington, Mass. Joe suprised the field and many spectators(but not himself) as he powered up the 7.6 mile course(with an elevation gain of 4650 feet!) in 1:01:31 to finish 4th overall. This finish means he has earned a spot on the US Team to go to the World Mountain Running Championships in Zurich, Switzerland in September! We are so excited for this huge accomplishment. Good going Joe and enjoy the trip this summer.
